Baby Boy Names?

If you have a lot of children you are going to laugh at me, but I’m having a hard time deciding on a name for our baby boy. We’ve already named 3 boys with our favorite names and our list has run out.

There are so many nice names that we can’t use because we have a large family and a large circle of friends that have taken dibs. So Seth, Sean, Isaac, Jacob, John, Peter, Paul, and pretty much anything starting with J aren’t available.

I’ve made it a matter of prayer and will continue to do so. I’m sure the Lord will answer when the time is right. But it will feel so nice to have something to call our cuddly little bundle while we wait to meet him.  And in the mean time it’s fun to look at names.

Here’s a list of some that Darren and I can agree on, though none of them really grab us. Do you have any opinions? The last name is Coffman if that helps you hear the music of it. How about pairings of first and middle names?

And here’s a couple of photo of what all our babies pretty much look like, though these are Brandon.  They are generally big and fat (around 9 lbs) with loads of dark hair and poochy lips, lol.  I really like our babies.  Though the sono tech says this one is smallish so far.  That would be a unusual and since I’m pretty sure on our dates I’m hoping that they were a little off on their measurements and that everything is okay with baby.

Possible baby Names

Garrett: German: Strength of the spear

Matthew: Hebrew: Gift from God

Andrew: Greek: Manly

  1. Jennifer G. says:

My boys are Robert Allen, Michael Andrew, and Thomas Aaron, but I think Matthew Elijah would sound nice with your last name, too.

  2. Andrea says:

How about Jax? Meaning God has been gracious, has shown favor.

It’s probably a J name that no one has dibs on yet 😉

  3. AlaskanAlison says:

I like Garrett, Gregory, and Jared for first names. I think Matthew and Andrew always make really nice middle names and go with almost anything. I’m also always a big fan family names for middle names.

  4. Wendy Spinelli says:

I’m due about the same time as you and I thought I was having another boy but we are having a girl. We really liked Elijah and I liked the previous comment that suggested Matthew Elijah.

  5. Deann says:

    how about
    Jaxon
    Jarvis
    Henry

I like Milton from your list – easy to spell/pronounce, but not every kid is named that~!

  6. Sarah Teske says:

I like Garrett and Gideon. I have two girls, so I haven’t looked at the boy names much. But I do like Elias, Peter, Will and Ezra Jack (as in Ezra Jack Keats — one of my favorite children’s authors and illustrators.)

    My two cents.

  7. Georgianna says:

I love the name Beaumont. That is such a cute name and I might steal it if I ever have a boy. But my husband’s name is Aaron, and he is wonderful so you might consider it, since its biblical too. (unless you already ruled it out, I can’t remember that list.)

  8. Jeaneen says:

I think your last name goes great with all those names:)
We have a son named Grant and we love his name and him:)We had planned to name our last little one Garrett if it was a boy, but she was a girl.:)
I like Gideon too-I think we like G names-hehe, but we have 2 that aren’t.
I also really like your choices that are more unique
    Beaumont and Milton.

And just to throw another one out there I love the names Benjamin and Harrison.

  9. Cheryl says:

We have four boys (& 3 girls)…..feel free to steal a name from our list. I totally understand…boy names are sooo hard for us to decide on. Girls were easier to choose for us. Our boys are: Dawson Royce, Brady Troy, Connor Patrick and Justin Wade.

    Congrats!

  10. Buffy says:

We have a son named MacLane John. We call him Mac. It’s a family surname from my husbands side. Everyone we meet says they love it. We’ve also seen it spelled McLane. I also have a pre-school with 3 boys. They are Hayden, Ryker and Luke. All adorable, sweet little boys.

  11. Kathi says:

Have always liked these names for boys.

Josiah – Hebrew – Fire of the Lord
Elijah – Hebrew – Lord is my God (prophet who, according to the Passover story, will announce the coming of the Messiah)
Nathaniel – Hebrew – Gift of God

  12. Heather says:

    Our favorites are:
    Lincoln: From The Lake Settlement
    Landon: From The Long Hill
    Micah: Who Is Like God?

I agree that boy names are hard, I agree! Thankfully only 2 out of our 5 are boys, Ty & Gabriel (or we’d have had a hard time!) Blessings ~Heather

  13. Country Girl in the says:

Following this post with interest. I am due shortly after you, on May 11. We have a girl’s name picked out, but have not come up with a boy’s name yet. I do like a number of the names on your list. We have two boys already and one girl. The boys are Caleb Andrew and Judah Alexander. And our girl is Rebekah Ann. I’ll be checking back to see what other boy’s names are mentioned.

  14. Karen says:

I love Gregory 🙂 My oldest is named Gregory Alan, although I think Gregory Dean also sounds good. A nice strong name you don’t hear very often. Good luck and congrats on a baby BOY! 🙂

  15. liesl says:

Has Josiah been taken? My little guy is a Josiah and it suits him well. Names we considered were Eli, Noah and Samuel. We like good strong Bible names.

  16. Andrea says:

How about Matthew Grant Coffman? It is a solid and manly name. However, the lilt of Matthew gives a gentleness to it. Gentle and manly…what a great combo! BTW. I LOVE THOSE BABY LIPS!

  17. jodimichelle says:

We have an Oliver Wayne and are biased to it’s ring of course 🙂 Oliver is a name that we’ve liked since before having babies – when our first was a girl we decided to wait and see (but keep the name as a possibility) for another baby if it were a boy. Obviously a few years later this was the case and we were ecstatic to use the name. Wayne is my (step) dad’s first name, unfortunately he passed when we were pregnant with our daughter. So a very special name to us, indeed 🙂

I love your list so far! How fun to be naming another baby boy in your family – what a blessing!!

  18. Jenn says:

Boys names are hard. We had a hard time choosing a name for our son. We had four miscarriages before he was born so we wanted to pick a name that meant something special to us. We chose the name Kasper Jude. It means treasurer in German, or polished stone.

I like Milton for a middle name. What about Levi?

  19. Carrie says:

    Hi Angela!

I like the idea of using your Dad’s middle name for baby’s middle name. I bet he’d be very proud and honored! What about looking through the family trees on both sides to see if there are any other family names that call out to you? We’ve enjoyed using family names, though are following the Jewish tradition of only naming after those who have passed on. Just over a month away from arrival of either Lillian Elizabeth or David George! While I’d love a little girl, having Sam & David is pretty cool too. 🙂 Maybe the Lord will bless you or Darren with a dream to reveal the name? What names do the other kids like? I remember liking Fiona for a girl, until the car I named that was totalled, then decided names should not be shared between cars or animals and children.

Praying all goes well, happy naming!

  20. Callie says:

I find it hard to pick a name without hearing how it will sound with all the other children’s names. It was important to me that they “fit” together. Of course what I think fits together might not fit together at all in someone else’s mind. Our last son’s name was really hard to pick out, but we finally found one. We have four boys……Cooper, Wyatt, Rylan, & Hudson

  21. Laurie V says:

I like Andrew. It’s actually on my husband and my “both like” name lists. I knew a Thaddeus growing up, and the name “Thad” is super cute.

Also, I’m a little bias towards Kraig because that’s my husband’s name (spelled Craig though).

  22. Renee Smith says:

I really like Gabriel from your list. I am also a big fan of Dominic Henry and Liam Patrick; those are my sons’ names. Having had two boys in a row, we only have boy names on our lists and others included: James, Vincent, Jude.

I agree with the comment about the names “fitting together”… both with the family’s names and with the middle name. We thought to ourselves, what will the next member of the band be named? (we always daydream about our family having a band when our kids are a little older; we love music)

  23. Buffy says:

My son’s name is Micah. It has great meaning, is Biblical, unique, yet not so unique that it is “weird”.

I never had another boy (I have 3 girls). My other boys’ names were Samuel James or Elijah James.

Have fun naming your handsome man. I love those baby lips in that picture of your son!

  24. Pam says:

My son’s name is Grant, I love it. There aren’t a lot around and he gets a lot of comments that people like his name.

  25. Margaret says:

We have two sons and their names are: Isaiah Wood (Wood is my maiden name) and Ezra Leland (Leland is my husband’s middle name.)

  26. Lura says:

I really liked Isaac when our 3rd son was born, but that had already been taken by another family member. We went with Isaiah Matthew.

  27. Kara says:

I have a Gideon Tyler and a Caleb Jon. For Gideon, at first I couldn’t decide if we really wanted to go with it – it seemed a little too unusual, and a bit too strong for an infant. After a day of being unnamed, he did officially become Gideon – but we called him Tyler. Until at age 4 when he saw how many other Tylers there were around, then he said he wanted to be called Gideon and never went back. Now I just love the name (and especially the meaning behind it) and we should have just used it from the beginning!

  28. Jennifer I. says:

How about Adam for a first name? That’s my oldest son’s name. His middle name is Christopher because that’s been my favorite boy’s name forever. My middle son is Jason & his middle name is Cosgrove (my husband’s grandma’s maiden name) & our youngest is Aaron Michael. Aaron because we really liked it & Michael because that is my husband’s first name.

  29. Melissa says:

I didn’t read the others so these names might have already been mentioned but I love them:

Timothy Josiah (I just love the sound of that)
(Timothy: Greek, honored of God) (Josiah: Hebrew, God supports)
    Nathan Andrew
(Nathan: Hebrew, gift of the Lord) (Andrew: Greek, strong, manly)
    ZacharyJoel
(Zachary: Hebrew, the Lord has remembered) (Joel: Hebrew, Jehovah is God)
Benjamin Levi (both great BOM names too)
(Benjamin: Hebrew, son of my right hand) (Levi: Hebrew, joined)
    Christopher Micah
(Christopher: Greek, Christ-bearer) (Micah: Hebrew, who is like God?)

I love baby names! Now if I could just come up with the perfect girl’s name for our little bundle of joy. Hmmm. 😉

  30. Alicia Taylor says:

I have 4 boys and 1 girl. Houston Alec, Hayden Michael, Heath Kendall, and Harrison Cade.

I like Grant and Garrett. What about Shelby or Carter?

  31. ursula says:

I noticed Hugh on the list. Careful! That was on our short list for our third child, but much as we like it, we realized what it would sound like to strangers in use: imagine calling “Hey, Hugh (you), come back here!” at the supermarket or payground!

We went with the variant Hugo instead, and still occasionally get folks turning their heads wondering why we called out “You, go!” But we love it for him, he is proud of it and despite being relatively uncommon, it ‘s short, simple and masculine. Easy on the ears of our German relatives and familiar to his Spanish an French speaking friends. A sleeper name! Hugo Coffman has a nice assonance to it!

Here’s another unusual but solid choice: Ammon (Biblical)

    • Angela says:

      Ursula,
Thanks for the tip! I’ve never heard Hugh pronounced with a silent H before. That would make for interesting conversations, lol.

  32. Hannah says:

Oh, I love name discussions! 🙂 We’re currently expecting our first baby, a boy, and we’re naming him Erik Robert Kristopher (all three names are after special people). I really love the names Sebastian, Soren and Joel, but DH isn’t a fan, so I guess those are out for future babies. I’m sure you’ll come up with a great name!

  33. Carrie says:

Gideon and Milton are different and neat! We have 3 boys Jesse, Zebulyn and Cooper. People say….Zebulyn? Really? I would not change any of their names, esp Zeb. It truly fits him besides how many Zebulyns do you know? Zebulyn Pike …. Zebulyn Walton….and now my Zebulyn. Good Luck!

  34. Jennifer says:

Grant. But then I have a BIL named that has a heart of gold once you get past his sometimes rough exterior. And my youngest also has that as his middle name.

  35. Donna English says:

I like Jefferson Garrett Coffman. I wish I had used Jefferson Garrett but we didn’t. Jeff can be the nickname and I like Garrett for the middle name because that was my maiden name. I still can’t believe we didn’t use that for a middle name at least on one of our sons. (You went to camp with our sons many moons ago! Ha.) Have you thought about Christopher Garrett Coffman? Chris Coffman has a nice ring to it.
