I mentioned in a previous post that I have a lot of towels (for a lot of people) and no linen closet. I’ve been wondering about what to do for awhile. I used to have a wicker laundry basket beside the tub with towels in it. But it blocked the heater/air conditining vent and didn’t hold enough towels. Then I saw these cute wall cubes at Martha Stewart and though, “I can do that!” But mine ended up with nails sticking out all over.
And then I saw this Lettered Cottage Post where they found a shabby wooden window box and brought it indoors for towel storage. It was super cute and fit in nicely with our new master bedroom theme which we plan to redo around our favorite vacation spot (The Bahamas.) Only wooden window boxes aren’t easily found around here. Then I thought I would build one out of the parts of our deck that are falling off. But the last time I built something from wood… Anyway, it was very demotivating.
Then one day I was at Big Lots with my 2 girls just wasting time. And we found some wire window boxes for just $10 each. I’d been around the internet looking a window boxes enough to know that it was a steal, so I grabbed 2. I used some thingies from the plumbing department at Home Depot with some sheet rock screws to hang them. And Voila!
I think I may paint them white. And I need to wash some towels now that I have a place to put them. I can store 10 towels off the floor and in perfect reach of the tub. And the best part is since the window boxes were made to use outdoors a little moisture won’t bother them.
I also have the peat moss liners left over. I almost threw them away, but Heidi stopped me. I’m so glad she did. I’ve got a project in mind for now….maybe for my front door? It is front porch zone week over at Fly Lady. :).
Very cool! I love that idea.
Love this idea. I have a linen closet but it is in the hallway, not the bathroom and the kids are always forgetting to grab towels before they shower. This would solve that problem perfectly…guess I am off looking for some wire window boxes.
What a great idea! I like them the color they are, by the way. 🙂 VERY cute! I may have to try this…we have NO storage in our bathrooms and no linen closet either. Thanks for the idea!! 🙂
I super love these! I’ve been looking for something just like this, but never thought outside the “box”!!! Great Idea!!
Wonderful idea! We also have no linen closet (and no coat closet, and no pantry), and I’m always trying to figure out what to do with all the towels. Thank you for sharing this–it looks very nice!
I, too, was going to say that I like them the colour they are … I like how the black looks in contrast to the light coloured towels. But that’s just me .
Love your blog, very inspiring!
Until I was pregnant with the 7th baby we lived in a 1,000 sqft bungalow with one bathroom and NO storage. I had trouble with rolled towels drying to be used again (I make the kids re-use them). I bought doible towel bars and DH hung them one over the other over the heating vent. Then we hung two towels next to each other on each bar and got eight towels up. Hubby and I had an over-the door rack on the door. For clean towel storage, I took the nicest dresser we owned and moved it into the hall. I filled it with dishtowels on top, then hand towels and face clothes, and towels on the bottom. With a cute dresser scarf, a lamp, the phone and a basket for nail kit/ eye glass repair it looked good. I got a lot of compliments. I have found that those old homes that have no closets, cupboards or vanities require a lot more furniture.
Totally voting for keeping them the color they are-they look great with the towel color and you really can see the pretty design of window box itself because it contrasts with the wall color.
That said-OMG it’s a genius idea! Water doesn’t hurt it, it holds loads, it’s up on the wall which is usually wasted space in a bathroom, and it’s NOT on the floor getting every towel wet when someone decides they’ve got to potty RIGHT NOW and lunges out of the tub along with half their bathwater. (oooh yeah, I’ve had toddlers in my house too! LOL!)
I’m going to prowl Big Lots this weekend…
I used that same coat rack on the left of your picture for all of our towels! It has a row of 6 hooks and can put 2 towels on each! All my children are little so the hanger is low with little framed pictures of each of us above each hook so they know where to hang their own towel. But that is a wonderful idea to use window boxes because I can put one above the coat rack as our family grows for the taller people. It would look great!
