Organizing Linen Closets

When I look at a well-organized linen closet I notice they have a lot less stuff than I do.  I’m still trying to figure out what amounts of things I need.  I have a bin in the attic of old towels for washing cars and camping. In addition, each child has 1 towel to themselves, color coded.  We have about 2 dozen almost white washcloths Then I have lots of misc towels from wedding presents 14 years ago, my college days and some from Darren’s college days.  Makes you wonder what actually landed in the rag bin, huh?

I’m waiting to buy new towels until we remodel our bathroom.  I’m not sure what colors I’ll settle on and want to make that decision later. I plan to buy 2 bath sheets, 2 bath towels, 3 hand towels, and 8 face cloths. I just made those numbers up, but I think that is what we can use and wash and store well. Each of our beds has 2 sets of sheets.  Plus 2 sets for the guest bedroom in the attic.  That’s 18 sets of sheets! Not to mention extra mattress pads; blankets; duvets etc.

These things make me happy:  Neat stacks of folded linens; pretty shelf paper; shelf labels; matching bins; and coordinating colors. I love guest items that aren’t used very often tied up with ribbon.  And labels.  Lots of labels.

What about you?  How many linens do you have?  Do you have a rule of thumb?  What is your best storage tip?

Your Own Gift Wrapping Station

My biggest mess in my office right now is gift wrap.  I moved a year ago, but never unpacked that box. Since Christmas the box has been broken on two sides and the contents strewn around my office. If I showed you a picture you might lose all respect for me.  So here’s one that is inspiring me.

I’ve been researching the best options for me in this home.  At my old home, we had an unfinished storage room in the basement.  Darren hung pegboard over the deep freeze and I used inexpensive peg hooks to organize all my stuff.  It was lovely.  I used my deep freeze for a work table and all my supplies were at easy reach. I had a Rubbermaid tub (not see through) that I stored my purchased gifts in on the shelves nearby.  So handy.

In this house, my office is where I like to do all the gift storing and wrapping for now, but I have no wall space.  The ceiling is A-line and it angles down to 2 feet up from the floor on two sides.  I’ve covered the two triangle shaped walls with shelving and desks. I put a couch on one side of the room and shoved all my ugly stuff behind it.  Only, there’s more ugly stuff than couch, so it peeks out.    There is a small closet in the front of the room that holds the furnace for the top two floors of the house.  I’m tempted to hang pegboard in there to store all my wrapping stuff. It’s not very big in there and I’d actually have to do the wrapping somewhere else.  That’s a mess waiting to happen now that I think about it.

My other choice is to set up in the storage area in the basement.  It’s already lined with pegboard! I haven’t decided what I want to store in that room yet.  My freeze dried food, home canning supplies, and Christmas stuff is in there now.  Decisions, decisions! There would be room down there for gift storage and a work table too.  Then the stuff behind my couch might start to disappear….

I have my Amazon shopping cart full of adorable pegboard wire baskets that would have me in good shape right away.  They are super affordable too.

So what about you?  How do you organize your gift wrap?  What would you do in my shoes?

Update:  I did the pegboard in the storage room in my basement and I love it!  When we finish the basement, it might get turned into a pool table room.  Then I’ll have to figure something else out.

5 Steps for Organizational Bliss aka How to Organize Almost Anything

Drumrolllllll please. Are you ready for this?  5 Steps makes it sound so easy doesn’t it? I hope you can have fun with this and look at all your stuff with fresh eyes.  Try to think outside the box… :).

Love baskets for organizing. These are Threshold baskets from Target and fit in their closetmaid systems.

1. Take a before photo of the mess.  You’ll be glad you did when it’s awesome later!  Then, remove everything from the space you are organizing (even if it is just to the other side of the same room).  Try to put papers with papers, photos with photos etc. as you stack stuff. But don’t spend a lot of time on that right now.

Pegboard's are inexpensive and very versatile. This garden center idea is from Martha Stewart. Think what a pegboard could do in a home office, closet, or sewing center?

2. . Vacuum and dust everything thoroughly.  Take a picture of the clean space.  Use your cellphone, so the picture will be portable.  And drink in the emptiness of it all.

I love labels and matching containers. I use what I have, figure out how much it will cost to upgrade to matching and then save a little cash in an envelope every month until I can go for it.

3.  Measure the space.  Make notes of anything that might be important later such as space between windows, height to the window sill.  etc.  Type this info into a note sheet on your phone so it will be handy with your blank room pictures for shopping purposes.

4.  Sort through your items throwing all trash away, recycling what you can, and filling a box for donation or garage sale. While you’re sorting ask yourself:

“Do I use it?”

“Do I want to decorate a room around this object?”

“What’s the worse thing that would happen if I got rid of this?”

“What’s the consequence if I keep it?”

Make note of what you have left.  What kind of storage solutions do you need? A gift wrapping center?  Photo albums?  A scrapbook supply corral? Ask yourself, “What is causing this chaos?” “What would make it better?” Create a wish list of the items that would make your space ideal. Don’t worry about expense at this point.

I would LOVE to have a linen closet like this. Love labels, love matching bins. Read more about it at Simplified Bee: http://www.simplifiedbee.com/2011/06/stylish-organized-linen-closet-before-after.html

5.  Shop your house for immediate storage solutions.  Is there a bookcase that you can re-purpose from another room? Canning jars?  Washed-out food containers?  Shoe boxes?  Make it as lovely and useful as you can without spending a dime. As you put things away, put items that you use all the time in easy reach.  Use them every day?  They can go on top of a desk or counter top.  Use them once a week?  Slip them into a drawer or cupboard and make sure nothing gets put on top of them.

Take another picture!  You need to compare the mess, with empty, to how it looks now.

You should be exhausted right now.  If not, you cheated  you have amazing stamina! Now you can have a healthy snack and scour the internet looking for ideas.  Set the timer so you don’t forget to cook dinner, lol.  I like to get ideas from pinterest <3 ; houzz.com; potterybarn.com; and iheartorganizing.com.

After I get a general idea of the items that would make my organizing  masterpiece complete, I start shopping for the lowest cost options.  My favorite places to shop for these types of things are:  Dollar Tree; Amazon.com; Target; Old Time Pottery (especially for baskets!); Hobby Lobby (shelf brackets–yes please!); and Jo-Ann.  If I had an Ikea I would be all over that.  (We are getting one in 2014!!!!).

I do a lot of shopping online, but then like to go visit the item in store if possible.  That’s when my cellphone pictures come in handy–and my measurement list from before. I can hold up my picture of my room next to the item and imagine how it will look.  Sometimes I buy several things just to try them out and take back what didn’t work.

Since September  I’ve had a cash envelope for organizing and home decor items.  I love that!  Before I had to squeeze these kind of items out of my music lesson earnings or garage sale cash.  I love having a set amount to count on each month that I can choose to save for larger items or gradually pick up a few smaller ones.  It may be years before my home is the organized paradise I imagine, but every day is better than the day before.

How about you?  What’s your favorite way to organize?  What are  favorite organizing products? Do you have a money saving secret to help us organize for less?

End of Fitness Week

After today I’m moving most of fitness talk to my new blog, Centsably Fit. In January 2011 I dedicated a whole month to fitness and weight loss.  I was pregnant with Grant at the time–how time flies!  It was before I met Holly and joined Fit Yummy Mummy, but it’s still some of my best stuff.  Below you’ll find a list of those posts and links to read more.

Tomorrow we start a new topic, Organization!  I’ll tell you more about what to expect in tomorrow’s intro post.

I’ve started a new blog! I’m allowing myself this week to share some yummy fitness related recipes with you at groceryshrink.com and then I’m moving this kind of talk over to my new blog.  This will be where I share my food and exercise journal with the NYTC 2013 challenge.

What you can expect:  cell phone snapshots of my food right before I devour it, a brief description of my workouts and any muscle improvement or soreness, screen shots of my MyFitnessPal Journal, and measurement progress reports.

It launches on January 7th–the day the NYTC begins.  I’ve already posted my goals for the challenge, so pop over, check them out and get subscribed for email updates.

P.S.  I’ll still be updating Grocery Shrink regularly and have a year of posts mapped out for you here.

Is This Your Time?

Is there a fitness goal on your resolution list this year? Was there last year too?  I’m right there with you. Let this year be your year to make your dreams a reality.

It’s been over a year since I started working out with Holly Rigsby, owner of Fit Yummy Mummy.  I’m stronger than ever and gearing up for more fitness gains this year.

I’m 36 years old, have given birth to 6 children and need to be serious about fitness.  My family counts on me to be strong and have energy to meet all their needs. When I eat right and exercise we all benefit.

Any healthy eating plan and exercise program that you will follow is the right one for you.  If you already have a program you love and can stick to, I don’t want to change that.  If you don’t have one yet, I recommend Fit Yummy Mummy.  The workouts take 15-20 minutes a day and the food is normal sensible food that can be found at discount grocers like Aldi.

Holly will start her New Year Transformation Challenge January 7th, and I’d love to see you there.  All FYM club members can participate in the challenge with all the extra coaching for no additional charge. If you have had trouble sticking to a program in the past, the benefit of the support group, the journals, extra coaching, and prizes might be the extra motivation you need.

Registration starts January 2nd

Don’t sign up yet unless you are already a ClubFYM member or already have The FYM ebook package.

Because you can get the first month free.

I encourage you to register early as the whole process can take an hour or so (since you will need to take measurements and photos and upload them to your secure journal.)

Here’s the theme for the challenge:

If you don’t already have her digital ebook/video package, I recommend it.  It makes it much easier to get started with the program and has simplified sets of exercises more suitable for beginners than the monthly workouts that club members get as part of their membership every month.  I saved the member workouts and used them later when my strength was built up.

When you buy the ebook package the first month of club membership is free.

After that it’s $20 a month if you choose to continue.  For your money you get a new set of workouts every month; online support from other club members; an opportunity for personal training from Holly (you can upload video of yourself doing the exercises and she will suggest form corrections) or you can just ask questions about exercise modifications etc…During challenges, Holly gives extra homework assignments 3 times a week to help us get to the heart of being successful with our goals and to keep us motivated.  She also offers extra training periodically in the form of conference calls or video chats.

If you will be joining the New Year Transformation Challenge with me, leave a comment and let me know!  My user name at clybfym is AngelaCoffman so I’m easy to find there too.

Happy New Year Gift for You :)

Previous years my resolutions have been pretty awesome.  So awesome that they never got done :).  So this year I’m making one simple resolution and made it in a chalkboard print to hang in my office.  If you click on the link below you will get a printable PDF version that will trim to an 8×10 and fit in a standard frame.

Click Here to Download New Year chalkboard prints PDF

I made these after seeing Nest of Posie’s blog post here. Her Christmas prints are super amazing, way more amazing than these here.  I really like the chalkboard look, but not the chalkboard dust.  It’s a win-win :).

Getting Ready for the First Day of School

I know some of you have already started school.  But for the rest of you, here’s a fun idea via pinterest. I’m gearing up for packing lunches and hope to add a few more fun items once in awhile.  I’ve put my brainstorm of ideas into my latest eBook, Homemade and Healthy to Go. It will be available for sale on August 15th, After I give all current Grocery Shrink Plus subscribers their free copy.  Membership has its perks and if it’s not the 13th of August yet, you can still subscribe to the menus and get your free copy too.

This next idea isn’t mine, so isn’t in the book. Isn’t it adorable?  And Smarties are at Dollar Tree :).

Here’s the original pin:

Here’s my version.  Definitely not as cute without the red and white polka dots!  I loved her scallops so splurged on the 3.5 inch cutter below since Joann had them 40% off.  It was still $15 on sale so I will be using these circles everywhere.  On place labels; birthday gifts; Christmas Gifts; baby gifts; cupcake picks…my family is going to get sick of paper scallops.

My color printer is on the fritz, so I opted to cut the scallops out of scrap cardstock, and print just the circles.  Glue dots stuck everything together quickly.

Happy New Year 2011!

I hope you had a lovely evening and a good rest and are ready to work :).  Today I’ll show you the basic math of weight loss.  It’s so easy a child can figure it out and there’s only 5 numbers to remember.

1.  Your weight goal.  Healthy weight varies within a 15 pound window for a group of women the same age and same height.  The lower-mid-point for finding weight is to give yourself 100 lbs for being 5 feet tall and adding 5 lbs for every inch over 5 feet tall you are.  So a woman who is 5’6″ should weigh around 130 lbs.  At 130 pounds she’ll look great in a bikini though she may choose not to wear one.  But at 140 pounds she’ll be on the high end of healthy and still feel great.  If she is very small boned and has a super fast metabolism, she might find her ideal weight closer to 125.  These weight ranges all consider a healthy balance of muscle in the body.  It is possible to be at a healthy weight and still be overfat with too little muscle.    If you’d like more help figuring a healthy weight range, try this site.

2.  A pound of fat is worth 3,500 calories.  To lose a pound of fat you need to use 3,500 more calories than you eat.  If you want to lose a pound a week, you’ll need to create a 500 calorie deficit every day.  If you’d like to lose *2 pounds a week, then you need a 1,000 calorie daily deficit.

 3. Basal metabolic rate (BMR):  This is the number of calories you would burn if you stayed in bed all day.  You don’t want to eat fewer calories than your basal metabolic rate when dieting unless you are under the control of your doctor**.  It’s easy to find out what your BMR is, just click over to this site and plug in your numbers.

4.  Daily calorie needs:  This is the amount of calories you would need to maintain your weight at your current activity level.  It’s basically the number of calories you are eating each day right now.  Once you know your BMR, your daily calorie need is easy to figure out based on the Harris Benedict Scale.

If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Multiply your BMR x 1.2

If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Multiply your BMR x 1.375

If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Multiply your BMR x 1.55

If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Multiply your BMR x 1.725

If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Multiply your  BMR x 1.9

5.  Fat loss calorie level: To find out how many calories you can eat a day and lose a pound of fat a week, take the number you found in step 4 and subtract 500.  To find out how many calories a day to lose *2 pounds of fat a week, subtract 1,000 calories a day.  Make sure these numbers don’t fall below your BMR.  If they do, you will have to create the additional calorie defecit through exercise.

If you have those 5 numbers you’ve done great today! Write them down in a small notebook that you can use to keep track of your progress.  We’ll come back and re-figure the numbers after we’ve lost 10 pounds.  That will make sure our weight loss progress continues.  All fat loss comes from a calorie consumption/use relationship, but if  you hate counting calories I will show you some ways  to get the same results without all the numbers.

Monday we’ll talk about how to use this information to make a delicious meal plan that will keep you eating nutritious food all day long.  And Tuesday we’ll discuss ways to stay motivated.

*Losing more than 2 pounds a week through calorie restriction alone after the first 2 weeks of a new fitness plan without the constant oversight of a doctor is not recommended.  The first 2 weeks additional weight loss can be attributed to excess water weight loss or toxin weight loss and is normal.

**Consuming too few calories can result in lowered metabolism, nutrient deficiencies, and heart problems and should not be undertaken without the close supervision of a physician.

Preparing for the New Year: Day 4

Thursday:  Physcial

Weight loss and fitness goals are the #1 resolution every year!  It’s also a billion dollar industry.

I’m no stranger to this one and I’d like to make better choices this year.  Even though I’m pregnant and won’t be losing weight for 3-4 months, I can still make positive eating and exercise choices for my growing baby and me.

Only a few of you know the life-long struggle I’ve had with weight, how I conquered childhood obesity at the age of 12, and recovered back to my prepregnancy weight after each of my 5 deliveries even though I gained 30-80 pounds.  Through struggle comes education!

The month of January I have dedicated the blog to telling you everything I know about losing weight, planning a healthy diet, and building muscle.  It’s going to be fantastic and 100% free!   Make your goals now, but save your money until February.  After I’ve told you all I know and you still feel the need for a gadget, supplement, or weight loss system, I’ll let you do it :).

Be specific on your goals.  Don’t just say “I want to lose weight.”  How much?  By When?  If you want to eat healthier what does that mean?  Be speicific and write it down.  If you’re not sure how to get there right now, that’s okay.  I’ll walk you through it one day at a time.  And if you’re tired of weight management menu’s that cost a fortune to prepare and taste too exotic to eat, or expensive exercise equipment, rest assured you’ll get none of that here!

Physical Resolutions might Include:

-weight loss

-strength building

-establishing an exercise habit

-a new hairstyle or beauty regime

-cutting back on sugar, soda, coffee, chocolate, or other bad habit

-keeping a food diary

-eating more veggies and fresh fruit

-learning a new sport or hobby

– establishing a family activity night

-keeping better sleeping hours

-lightening your schedule to remove stress and create more relaxed family time
