After services each week, The scripture lady is always surrounded by children, eager to learn a new verse by memory.
If she has more children than she can work with, she has older children teach the younger ones.
She creates pictures like these to help the children get a mind picture for the words.
And then rewards them with tiny candy treats. I love it! Her incentives make the children feel fantastic about being in the Word.
I love this! Now I want to grow up to be the Scripture Lady at my church. 🙂 Thank you for sharing this, Angela!
Me too, Sarah. Right now I’m too stressed all the time to even fathom doing this. So I am grateful to this dear friend for picking up the slack where I am too weak to go. When I do work with my kids it’s far from fun like this. It’s more of a hurry up and learn it for this assignment. They would MUCH rather work with the scripture lady, lol.
I like this concept too but want to know how it really works….So how does this work exactly? Do the kids walk up to the scripture lady, hear/view the scripture, memorize on the spot, then are treated with candy? Do these scriptures coincide with what the kids learn in Sunday school or other teaching programs in the church? Do tell!
Hi Monica, The kids just gather around (filter in) and she explains the pictures to them and how it translates to the scriptures. The verses choices are somewhat random–not based on a lesson or anything, just good ones to know. And the pictures also help them remember the chapter and verse. When they can say the verse without her reminding them, they get a candy. They can work on them as long as they want–usually until their parents need to leave. She is one of the last to go home from the evening services :). For the memory to really stick, the kids need to practice at home too–just 5 minutes won’t give it to them for life. But it is amazing what they can do in 5 minutes!
The scripture that I have memorized has helped me and kept me from making some bad choices in my life. I’m grateful for the godly women that have invested in my life.
Thanks for sharing that. Being somewhat new to this congregation, I had no idea that we had someone who did this. I will have to have the girls find her next week!
I am loving this! We don’t have this at my church. Do you know where she gets the pictures–looks like it might be from a book or website? I’m dying to try this with my son.
Theresa, She makes them herself. She might use a clipart program or something. I’ll talk to her about possibly making them available with the “translation” :).
That is cool! Does she give them a copy of the pictures?
She doesn’t. For awhile the church printed them up in full color every month and sent them home with the families, but it wasn’t well used with the busy schedules during the week. So she does it herself after evening services.
Love it. You’ll be amazed how many scriptures the children can learn even the longer ones.
I love that they are starting early. I am working on scripture memorization right now and with that I had started a long time ago!
